The Washington Commanders have officially begun reshaping their coaching staff, parting ways with offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.. After a challenging season, the moves signal a clear shift toward reevaluating how this team is being built and coached on both sides of the ball.
These changes didn’t come out of nowhere. Inconsistency, execution issues, and a lack of sustained identity played a role throughout the season, and those concerns ultimately led to tougher decisions behind the scenes. When progress stalls, organizations are forced to ask whether scheme, communication, or leadership need to change, and the Commanders clearly felt it was time.
Now the focus turns to what comes next. Replacing two coordinators at once opens the door for philosophical shifts, whether that means leaning into a different offensive structure, redefining defensive priorities, or aligning more closely with the long term vision set by leadership. These hires will matter just as much as the departures.
This isn’t just about filling vacancies, it’s about direction. The Commanders must identify coaches who can develop players, establish consistency, and help move the organization forward rather than repeating the same cycles.
