The Washington Commanders officially opened Phase 3 of OTAs on Tuesday, beginning another important stretch of offseason development as the team continues building toward training camp.
While it is still early in the process, Day 1 provided several interesting takeaways from player interviews, coaching comments, and on-field observations.
Here are some of the biggest things that stood out.
Dan Quinn’s Message Was Clear
Head coach Dan Quinn emphasized communication, movement, and execution throughout the opening OTA session.
Quinn discussed the importance of efficiency, especially on early downs, while stressing the need for balance between the run and pass game. The focus appears to be on creating explosive opportunities through cleaner execution and stronger situational football.
The energy level around the team also stood out early, with Quinn appearing excited about the beginning of spring work and the overall ramp-up process toward training camp.
Jayden Daniels Looks Focused Entering Year 2
Jayden Daniels spoke with confidence following practice and made it clear that last season’s ending still motivates him.
Daniels mentioned there should always be something to prove if you are playing at this level, and he admitted the way last season ended left a bitter taste in his mouth.
On the field, Daniels looked sharp throwing the football and appeared comfortable operating within the offense early in OTAs.
He also praised several teammates, including Rachaad White as the two continue building chemistry, while calling Antonio Williams smooth and crafty. Daniels also complimented Chig Okonkwo’s speed and intelligence within the offense.
Defense Bringing Energy Early
New defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw described the defensive unit as hungry, aggressive, and physical following practice.
Kinlaw repeatedly mentioned the amount of talent within the group and said players were flying around throughout drills. He also stressed the importance of building a strong foundation during OTAs with nearly the full group participating.
After Washington’s defense struggled with injuries, penalties, and consistency last season, the tone around the unit already feels more aggressive entering Year 3 under Dan Quinn.
Practice Notes
Several players stood out during positional and team drills throughout the session.
Terry McLaurin looked focused and sharp during drills, continuing to show strong movement and attention to detail despite the early stage of offseason work.
Antonio Williams displayed impressive off-ball movement and made a smooth over-the-shoulder catch during drills.
Burks and Brown both flashed movement ability off the ball, while Chig Okonkwo’s speed stood out during portions of practice.
Matt Gulbin was active working through bag drills, and Jayden Daniels looked comfortable delivering the football throughout the session.
One notable development was the attendance of Laremy Tunsil, who was present for OTAs after not attending this portion of offseason work last year.
It is only the beginning of the offseason process, but Day 1 offered an early glimpse into the tone, energy, and direction Washington is trying to establish heading into 2026.
