2026 Commanders Schedule Released: Biggest Challenges, Key Matchups and NFC East Questions

Washington’s 2026 schedule is here, and the road back to NFC East contention won’t be easy. Can the Commanders stay healthy and take the next step this season?

The Washington Commanders officially know the path ahead for the 2026 NFL season.

With the schedule now released, attention quickly shifts from offseason optimism to the reality of what Washington will have to navigate in order to compete for the NFC East crown and return to playoff contention.

The Commanders’ schedule features several high-profile matchups, including key NFC East battles against the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants, along with difficult games against playoff contenders and elite quarterbacks throughout the season. Washington will also head overseas for an international matchup against the Colts in London, adding another unique challenge to the schedule.

While there are tough stretches on the calendar, this season will ultimately come down to whether Washington can improve in the areas that held the team back last year.

The biggest storyline remains Jayden Daniels.

If Daniels can stay healthy and continue developing within the offense, Washington has the potential to be significantly more competitive this season. His growth, decision-making and ability to create explosive plays will be central to the Commanders taking a step forward offensively.

But it cannot fall entirely on the quarterback.

A balanced offense will be critical throughout the year, especially against stronger defensive fronts and playoff-caliber teams. Establishing consistency in the running game, protecting Daniels and creating reliable production around Terry McLaurin and the rest of the offense could determine whether Washington remains competitive late into the season.

Defensively, there are still major questions entering the year.

The Commanders struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season, and improvement on that side of the ball may ultimately decide how far this team can go. Washington will need better execution, stronger depth and more reliable performances against high-level offenses if they hope to compete within the division.

The schedule release always brings excitement, but it also provides a clearer picture of the challenges ahead.

Now the focus shifts toward OTAs, training camp and preseason as the Commanders begin preparing for a season that could say a lot about the direction of the franchise moving forward.
